Erie Police Warn of Sex Offender Scam
Caller Claims To Be Local Law Enforcement - Demands Payment by Cards
In recent months at least two Erie community members have fallen victim to a phone scam targeting sex offenders. The caller claims to be a sex offender compliance officer, (in some cases purporting to be from Boulder County Sheriff's Office) or local law enforcement agency.
The victim is instructed to purchase iTunes, MoneyPak, Dot, Ebay, or other various cards and relay the card number over the phone to avoid fines or warrant fees.
The Erie Police Department will never attempt to collect fees, or financial information by email, text, phone, or any social media. We recommend you hang up the phone, or delete the email. If you believe you may be the victim of a scam, call the Erie Police Department to file a report at 303-441-4444.
