Introduce yourself and tell us what you do for the Erie Police Department
Rachel: Officer Patterson with Town of Erie Code Enforcement.
How long have you been a Code Enforcement Officer? How long with the Erie Police Department?
Rachel: 10 ½ years as a Code Enforcement Officer, 2 ½ months with Erie.
What got you into this field?
Rachel: I was introduced into the field by a family I had met in a previous job working retail. I immediately knew it was the right career choice for me. I enjoy being able to make a difference with the residents and business owners, and being able to provide assistance and education to help continue to make Erie a great place.
Tell us about an average day for you at work
Rachel: I start my day reviewing outstanding reports and making phone calls back to residents. I then spend a majority of my day in my vehicle. I start by addressing any new complaints and follow-up on previous complaints. I try to spend the afternoon proactively looking for ways to better the community and spend time educating residents and business owners by explaining our codes and why we have them.
Explain your role in the community? How do residents learn more?
Rachel: Prior to me taking this position, the Erie Police Department did not have a Code Enforcement Officer. This meant certain codes were enforced on a complaint basis only. I now have the opportunity to educate and work proactively with the community to build relationships. This helps in improving the compliance rate and helps the community as a whole.
If residents want to learn more about my role, they can reach me by contacting the Erie Police Department at 303-926-2800.
When you aren’t working, what do you do for fun?
Rachel: I spend all of my time with my daughters - attending activities, school functions, concerts - you name it, and I’m there with them!
What do you enjoy most about your job in Erie?
Rachel: I love the comradery the Town has. Everyone I have met has such a positive attitude, and they are proud of this community. It truly feels like a big family here! The Police Department has also been so welcoming and has a strong family feel. I’m grateful to work in a department which encourages transparency and gives its employees the resources to do their job.
