Pool Maintenance Update

Over the past couple of weeks, Town staff and a construction crew have been working hard to get the Erie Community Center pool ready for fun! Visitors may have noticed that there hasn’t been a lot of action on the pool deck during the past week or so. The reason for the work stoppage is to accommodate extended curing time for a new sealant on the deck. This ensures it hardens and stays in place for years to come. During this curing period, it was important to avoid exposing the seal to moisture.

Staff began re-filling the pool on Friday, Sept. 15 and are on track to complete the final maintenance tasks to open on Sept. 23! Handrails on the slide stairs have been repainted and reinstalled and this week the crew is firing up a new chlorine generator and replacing the old pool grates, so the pool will truly be like new. Beyond that, aquatics staff will be working hard to get the pool cleaned, put back together, and ready for guests. We appreciate continued patience with these projects and are excited to welcome visitors back to the pool soon!

National Cholesterol Education Month  

High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States. People with high cholesterol are twice as likely to have heart disease than people with lower cholesterol levels. An unhealthy lifestyle is the most common cause of high “bad” LDL cholesterol or low “good” HDL cholesterol. 

What raises the risk for unhealthy blood cholesterol levels?

• Eating a lot of foods high in saturated fats raises “bad” LDL cholesterol levels. 
• Lack of physical activity.
• Smoking lowers HDL cholesterol, particularly in women, and raises LDL cholesterol.
• Stress may raise levels of certain hormones, such as corticosteroid. These can cause your body to make more cholesterol.
• Drinking too much alcohol (more than two drinks a day for men or one drink a day for women).

The Weld County Department of Public Health & Environment (WCDPHE) encourages everyone to honor National Cholesterol Education Month by getting to know and control your cholesterol numbers. Updated COVID-19 Vaccine Approved  

An updated COVID-19 vaccine has been approved by the CDC. The new vaccine is specifically tailored to prevent illness caused by the COVID-19 strains XBB and EG.5, currently the most common strains of the virus in the country. The CDC recommends everyone six months and older get an updated vaccine to protect themselves.

“Cases of COVID-19 and hospitalizations are increasing in Boulder County and the surrounding region, and the most recent vaccine is an essential tool for staying healthy. Everyone who is eligible should get the newest vaccine to protect themselves and their loved ones as colder winter weather arrives,” said Keith Rawls, Boulder County Public Health’s Immunization Program Coordinator. 

In Boulder County, free vaccinations will be available for uninsured and underinsured adults through the Federal Bridge Access Program for COVID-19 Vaccines and Treatments.
