Weld County: First Death from WNVThe Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment (WCDPHE) announced on Friday, Aug. 4 the death of a 53-year-old resident from West Nile Virus (WVN); the first for the 2023 mosquito season. This year, Culex mosquitoes, which transmit WNV, are more prevalent in Colorado than in previous years. The increasing hot weather and afternoon thundershowers have created favorable conditions for the Culex mosquito. West Nile virus symptoms can appear three to 14 days after a bit by an infected mosquito. Initial symptoms can include fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, muscle aches and weakness, and rash, but most infected people don’t show any symptoms. If a person develops symptoms, they should see a health care professional immediately. There are no medications to treat or vaccines to prevent WNV infection. To see more about how Erie is working to prevent the transmission of West Nile Virus, visit www.erieco.gov/mosquito.

Cone ZonesEach week we list the projects that may have the biggest impact on traffic flow for that week. As always, please sign up for alerts to get more details about these projects and many others. More information and details for how to sign up are at www.erieco.gov/ConeZone. Briggs Street: Beginning Monday, Aug. 7 through Wednesday, Sept. 20, Construction crews will be partially closing Briggs Street in the vicinity of the Edward Jones Investment Building (212 Wells Street), as well as a segment of the sidewalk at the southwest corner of the intersection of Wells Street and Briggs Street. These closures are to support the excavation and installation of a new irrigation meter vault and backflow preventer within the landscaped island north of the Edward Jones building. This is part of a larger project aimed at relocating the main irrigation water meter tie-in for downtown Briggs St. and improving access for the Town to service the meter in the future and facilitating potential expansions of the existing irrigation system. The partial street closure and sidewalk modifications will occur during work hours (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.). Work crews aim to minimize the disruption to residents and businesses. Outside of these hours, the roadway and sidewalk will be fully accessible. Road work is weather-dependent, and timelines may shift. Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians should always be aware and use caution when in and around work zones. Whenever possible, please avoid the construction areas.
