Weld County: First Human Case of WNVThe Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment (WCDPHE) is investigating a potential case of West Nile virus (WNV) in a Weld County resident- the first of the 2023 mosquito season. This year, Culex mosquitoes, which transmit WNV, are more prevalent in Colorado than in previous years. The increasing hot weather and afternoon thundershowers have created favorable conditions for the Culex mosquito. West Nile virus symptoms can appear three to 14 days after a bit by an infected mosquito. Initial symptoms can include fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, muscle aches and weakness, and rash, but most infected people don’t show any symptoms. If a person develops symptoms, they should see a health care professional immediately. There are no medications to treat or vaccines to prevent WNV infection. To see more about how Erie is working to prevent the transmission of West Nile Virus, visit www.erieco.gov/mosquito.

Cone ZonesNeighborhood Speed Management Program: Answering the community's call for lower neighborhood speeds, the Town of Erie is delighted to announce the re-launch of the Neighborhood Speed Management Program (NSMP). This comprehensive initiative aims to support community engagement and improve neighborhood safety just in time for the Back-to-School season. Originally launched last fall, the Town took input from residents and revamped the Program's approach to be more inclusive for residents in the overall design of the initiative. During the next six months, Town staff and consultants will be fully engaged in research, cross-departmental collaboration, and community outreach sessions to optimize the NSMP. To learn more about the initiative and sign up to join focus groups or just receive regular updates, visit www.erieco.us/speed-management.
