Upgraded Equipment at Front Range Landfill

As waste breaks down in any landfill it releases gases including methane. At many landfills including the closed Denver Regional Landfill (DRL), methane is captured and used to generate electricity. Any excess methane that cannot be used to generate electricity is burned off in a controlled system to minimize methane emissions and ensure it does not become combustible. Waste Connections, which owns the Denver Regional Landfill site, has recently upgraded the methane extraction system that will pull methane from DRL and send it to a power generation system across the street from the Front Range Landfill.

As part of this upgraded system there is a new flare, which is the specific equipment that burns off excess methane. The old flare was an enclosed system, but the upgraded flare will show a visible, blue flame when the system is operating. This visible flame is normal. This methane extraction system and new flare is just west of the WCR5 and WCR6 intersection, meaning the flame may be visible from the Singletrack Trails and possibly farther to the west. The Front Range Landfill, Waste Connections, the Town of Erie, and Mountain View Fire District are collaborating to alert the public of this new upgrade. The Town is also monitoring methane emissions from the Landfill and other potential sources as part of the Town’s Air Quality Monitoring Program. You can review reports and find links to real-time monitoring data online.

UPDATE: AT&T Cellular Facility at Erie Community Park

Additional cellular connectivity is coming, but it's not here quite yet! The Town entered into a lease agreement with AT&T Mobility earlier this year for a new tower at Erie Community Park. Construction of the tower is complete, but the carrier must go through several internal processes before the tower is activated. AT&T anticipates putting the tower into service sometime in Q4 of this year.
Follow along with this Parks & Recreation project and others.
