Meet the Victim Services and Restorative Justice Programs Manager

We thank you for your continued support and introduce you to a recent addition to the Erie Police Department.

Who is Valerie Greenfield?
I've been with the Erie Police Department for three weeks as the newly established Victim Services/Restorative Justice Programs Manager. Before this position, I was a Victim Advocate for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office for five years. Victim Advocates work as a liaison with officers on scene to provide direct services to victims of crime. This includes crisis intervention, referrals to resources, and notification of rights under state law. Restorative Justice is a program that offers an alternative to retributive justice practices and provides facilitation between victims, offenders, and impacted parties of crime in an attempt to repair the harm that was caused. Both programs are designed to empower victims and give them a voice in the criminal justice process.

What do you love about working in Erie?
Erie is such a supportive community with a small-town feel that is very familiar to me. It feels like home. Same with the Town of Erie and the Police Department- it is a workplace that takes pride in recognizing and valuing its employees and community members.

Why did you want to be in law enforcement?
It can be an overwhelming, confusing, and scary situation when the events of a crime have disrupted someone's life. I was drawn to victim advocacy years ago as a volunteer and knew immediately after my first case I wanted it as a career. It is a privilege for me when I can support someone during possibly their most challenging moments and guide them through the initial steps of the criminal justice process. I hope that all victims and survivors have access to information, resources, and active participation in the case and can lead a life of healing and resilience after tragedy or crime.

Tell us about your average day.

So far, it's been about getting acquainted with the department's officers, detectives, and support staff; however, I have been working diligently to update materials and coordinate with other victim service providers to expand Erie's Victim Services programs. What are you doing when not working?
I enjoy roaming bookstores, going to the movies, and attending theatre productions. In addition, I try to explore Colorado as much as possible and spend time outdoors.

Favorite Movie and Music?
My favorite musical artist is Jewel. So if you ever get a chance to see her at a live show here in Colorado, you should go! And chances are I will be there too.
