Crosswalk Safety

There are numerous crosswalks within the Town of Erie, and not all are marked the same. The most consistent marking will be white painted stripes on the roadway. Other times, crosswalks will be marked with signage, signage with flashing yellow lights, or the presence of a traffic signal with electronic crosswalk signs.

Crosswalk Safety Bulletin

State and local traffic laws will apply regardless of how crosswalks are identified.

When traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation, a driver of a vehicle must yield to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk or when the pedestrian is approaching closer to the crosswalk.

In the diagram below, vehicles shall yield right of way to A and B only.
Crosswalk Safety Bulletin

Whenever any vehicle is stopped at a marked crosswalk or at any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear cannot pass the stopped vehicle.

No person shall stop, stand, or park a vehicle in any crosswalk.

Pedestrians aren’t exempt from responsibility while crossing crosswalks.

Pedestrians cannot suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and ride a bicycle, ride an electric-assisted bike, walk, or run into the path of a moving vehicle.

Every pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection must yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.

Pedestrians cannot cross a roadway intersection diagonally unless authorized by official traffic control devices.
