The Town of Erie is the largest community in Colorado to still be governed statutorily (following State Statute instead of our own governing document). In 2022 a question was added to the ballot asking Erie voters if they would like to create a Charter Commission of volunteer residents who would draft a new governing document - a Home Rule Charter. That measure passed and a Commission of nine residents was elected by voters to draft this important document. The Commission met weekly for nearly four months diving deep into local government best practices, listening to resident ideas, and drafting a document they agreed was the best for the Town of Erie.
Now, in November 2023 the proposed Charter is on the ballot for voters to decide if they approve this new governing document. When ballots arrive (mailing as of Oct. 16), voters in Erie should take time to review the proposed Charter document and vote for their choice.
