May 25, 2017: CDPHE Releases Air Quality Report for Woolley-Sosa and Erie Champlin Sites
The Town of Erie would like to make the public aware of a report issued this week by the CDPHE titled: "Health Risk Evaluation from Inhalation of VOCs in Ambient Air Near Woolley-Sosa and Erie Champlin Oil and Gas Sites."
Summary: The Oil and Gas Health Information and Response (OGHIR) Program at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) received a large volume of calls since December 2016 from residents in multiple neighborhoods in Erie reporting odor and health concerns possibly related to emissions from Woolley-Sosa and Erie Champlin sites.
In response, OGHIR deployed the Colorado Air Monitoring Mobile Laboratory (CAMML) on March 7-8 and March 20-23, to measure volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air where residents have reported health symptoms and odors.
The evaluation indicated that all air concentrations of individual and combined VOCs were below non-cancer health-based reference values. Cancer risks estimates for benzene, ethylbenzene, and the two VOCs combined were less than one in one hundred thousand, which is generally considered to be within the acceptable risk range.
Using currently available measurement technology and risk assessment methods, OGHIR is unable to document conditions that suggest an ongoing health hazard at this time. View the complete report (PDF).
May 1, 2017: Baseline Air Quality Sample Results - Waste Connections
The Town of Erie has contracted with Pinyon Environmental to perform air quality monitoring near the Crestone Peak Resources Waste Connections well site. Pinyon collected two 24-hour baseline air samples at the residential sampling location (Sampling Site 2) located to the west of Vista Parkway on April 15th, 2017, and April 21st, 2017. A health screening evaluation from these samples was conducted to identify baseline exposures for citizens in the area. View the baseline air quality results (PDF).
In the Spring of 2019, Crestone Peak Resources partnered with Seismic Acquisition Services, LLC. (SAS) to conduct a 3D seismic survey to safely and efficiently develop oil and natural gas.
Seismic data allows scientists to identify the rock formations that have the characteristics required to hold oil and gas. By using this technology, scientists are able to reduce the industry footprint and maximize production from individual wells.

May 8, 2012: Second Analysis of NOAA Data Determines Low Risk of Adverse Health Effects
As part of continued efforts to address the public's questions and concerns, the Town of Erie engaged in a second Air Quality Assessment of the NOAA data to determine what (if any) health effects would result from exposures to the levels of propane and benzene as presented.
The scientific analysis of the data conducted by Pinyon Environmental, Inc. concluded that the risk of Erie residents experiencing an adverse health effect over a lifetime exposure (70 years) to the reported Benzene and Propane concentrations is low.
During her presentation of the analysis to the Town of Erie Board of Trustees, Cynthia Ellwood, Ph.D., CIH, stated that compared to the levels presented by NOAA, the public would be at a greater exposure risk to Benzene when engaged in activities such as:
- Eating in a restaurant that permits smoking
- Fueling a vehicle at a gas station
- Sitting around a campfire
- Sitting in an idling car
- Waiting in a drive-thru lane

April 24, 2012: Analysis of NOAA Data Determines Erie' s Air Remains Safe
As part of efforts to do everything within its authority to protect resident's health and safety, the Town of Erie engaged in an independent, peer-reviewed Analysis and Health Impact of Propane Levels of the NOAA data to determine what (if any) health effects would result from exposures to the levels of propane as presented.
The scientific analysis of the data concludes that: "The levels of Propane in the NOAA study are 1,000 fold or more below those considered to be of a health concern." The average level of Propane as presented by NOAA was 20 parts per billion (ppb) and the maximum level was 115 ppb. According to the analysis: "Propane at 115 ppb (the peak level found) does not present a health concern to the citizens of the Town of Erie."

NOAA Summary of Findings
NOAA has posted a Summary of Findings for their Winter Air Quality Study conducted from the Boulder Atmospheric Observatory near Erie. The findings were presented by Dr. Steve Brown during the February 21, 2012 Board of Trustees meeting.
According to the NOAA summary: "The Boulder Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) tower provides a convenient site for making measurements of air quality. Although the tower is located near Erie, Colorado, measurements of elevated pollutant levels at the BAO do not imply that those levels are confined to the area or that the pollutants come from sources only in the immediate area. Tower data typically provide information representative of the broader Front Range region."
"Please note that analysis of the data from this study is in progress. When a peer-reviewed paper is published, we will make it available to the public."

February 4, 2013: Analysis of CDPHE Data Determines Health Risk is Low
The information provided in this report documents research conducted by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) in July and August 2012. Based on the understanding that the CDPHE study is limited in scope and quantity of data, the risk of Erie residents experiencing an adverse health effect over a lifetime exposure to the CDPHE reported concentrations of the gases discussed in this report is low.
