Water Heater Replacement
All listed items must be submitted regardless of submittal method.
- Completed and signed "Miscellaneous Permit" application
- Be sure to include the following information in the description:
- electric, gas, or propane
- appliance efficiency
- appliance location (basement mechanical room, 2nd floor closet, crawlspace, etc.)
- indicate if location is changing
- Appliance BTU and combustion air calculation if needed
- Homeowner Affidavit if the homeowner/occupant proposed to complete any of the work themselves or act as their own general contractor. (must own and occupy the property as primary residence to qualify)
Inspections for this type of permit are done by video. Contractor should create a video at the time of installation. The video must include all items on the list below. Videos shall be uploaded to an online video channel with the link provided to the Town, or submitted by any other method acceptable to the inspector. Submittals should be emailed to the Building Division. Subject line should include the address, permit number, and inspection type.
Please contact the Town of Erie if the video compliance method will not be possible.
All videos must show the address on the exterior of the property first. Video should be continuous. Show any manufacturer installation details that may differ from standard practice. State model number and BTUs. Show that instructions have been left on-site with unit. All items below must be shown in the video to pass inspection:
Standard fuel-fired water heater replacement inspection items:
- Flue connected, slope per manufacturer
- Combustion air to code, termination not confused as exhaust (gooseneck down)
- Pan if required by code given location
- Looped condensate line 8” diameter half filled
- Expansion tank or equal, strapped
- Gas line with sediment trap down stream of shutoff
- TPR with pipe within 6” of floor but not closer than 2 times pipe diameter
- Instructions present
- SD & CO detectors to code in the house
- Service outlet within 25’
- Anchorage of unit
Standard electric water heater replacement inspection items:
- Disconnecting means
- Overcurrent protection
- Wire size
- Expansion tank or equal, strapped
- Instructions present
- SD & CO detectors to code in the house if fuel fired appliances or attached garage are present
- Service outlet within 25’
- Anchorage of unit
