Erie Board of Trustees Action Items - February 27, 2018

Erie Energy Action Plan Implementation Process Approved

During Tuesday night’s meeting, the Board of Trustees approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Xcel Energy that outlines responsibilities related to the implementation of the Town of Erie Energy Action Plan. Upon execution of this MOU, the eighteen-month implementation phase of the Energy Action Plan will begin.

The Town of Erie has developed an Energy Action Plan to help institute a series of actions and activities that will lower energy use community wide and engage residents and businesses to take advantage of utility rebates to save resources. The plan consists of an energy vision, goals for energy savings, and specific and detailed strategies to achieve those reductions.

BACKGROUND: In March of 2017, the Town submitted an application to Xcel Energy to participate in their Partners in Energy program (PiE). This two-year program consists of a six-month planning phase and an eighteen-month implementation phase and is meant to assist communities to identify and prioritize their energy needs. In June of 2017, the Board approved a resolution authorizing a Memorandum of Understanding with Xcel Energy outlining responsibilities related to the Planning Phase of the Partners in Energy Program. The six-month planning phase concluded in January of this year.

National Nutrition Month Recognized

March has been proclaimed as National Nutrition Month in Erie. National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The theme for 2018 is "Go Further with Food," and its importance is timely for many reasons. Whether it's starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast or fueling before an athletic event, the foods you choose can make a difference. Preparing foods to go further at home and within the community can have a positive impact, as well.

The Erie Parks & Recreation Department participates with the Weld County Area Agency on Aging to provide a Senior Nutrition Lunch Program every Thursday at the Erie Community Center. This program is funded through the Older Americans Act (OAA). The original legislation established authority for grants to States for community planning and social services, research and development projects, and personnel training in the field of aging. Although older individuals may receive services under many other Federal programs, today the OAA is considered to be the major vehicle for the organization and delivery of social and nutrition services to this group and their caregivers.

The Senior Nutrition Lunch Program is open to anyone of any age. For those individuals 60 years of age or better there is a suggested donation of $4 per meal. All meals are coordinated through the Weld County Area Agency on Aging and provided by the University of Northern Colorado campus kitchen. In 2017, the Erie Parks & Recreation Department offered 48 lunch days. There were 2,574 lunches served, by four staff members and 15 volunteers that worked over 524 hours for the lunch program.

This year the Erie Active Adult program will be celebrating National Nutrition Month at the March 29, 2018 Senior Nutrition Lunch Program. There will be a guest speaker, Lorrie Wellman, RDN, Master Gardener, Weld County Area Agency on Aging. Each lunch participant will receive a kit to grow their own fresh herb.
