Did You Know?

The Erie Parks Division has a Sustainable Tree Nursery!

You already know Erie is a Tree City USA. But did you know our Parks Division recently started a sustainable Tree Nursery? Well they have, and it’s located right in the middle of Town at the Leon A. Wurl Service Center. Here are just some of the reasons why we think the new nursery is so great!

  • COST SAVINGS. The Parks Division plants a 1” caliper tree to grow in the nursery. Every year, the tree doubles in trunk caliper = doubles in value.

  • AVAILABILITY. There are a variety of trees on site ready for quick field replacements when necessary.

  • ACCLIMATION. Trees coming from Oregon, for instance, get a winter to harden off in the nursery allowing for those trees to be able to withstand planting shock in Colorado’s harsh environment.

  • HEALTHY. Air-pruned potted trees are only purchased for the nursery stock. This means they are all air-pruned roots, not circular roots. Circular roots bind the root ball and can lead to decreased tree health, vigor and longevity.

  • EDUCATIONAL. Parks staff are able to use this area to educate staff on species identification, basic pruning techniques, and proper drip irrigation rates.

Healthy trees ready when we need them!
Another great reason Erie, Colorado is the Best Place to Raise a Family!
