Celebrating National Volunteer Week

PD_Badge_Thumbnail

National Volunteer Week, April 23-29, 2017 is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. To help you get to know the V.I.P.S. (Volunteers in Police Services) who serve the Erie Police Department, we have interviewed two volunteers.

The volunteer program for the Erie Police Department improves customer service and community outreach. The police department's volunteer program helps improve the quality of life in Erie by enhancing the rapport between the police department and citizens, bringing innovation and advocacy, and providing opportunities for citizens to participate and learn about the police department and local government.

Learn how these V.I.P.S. got involved and what opportunities there are for others who want to get involved.

Introduce yourselves

Bill: Bill Flynn, resident of Erie and volunteer for the Erie Police Department. I am a grandfather of 7 and a retired “corporate gypsy”.
Devi: Devi Suess, also a resident of Erie and volunteer for the Erie Police Department. I work in victim services and enjoy traveling, knitting, cooking and entertaining.

How long have you been volunteering for the Erie Police Department

Bill: I started in 2013, when we were over in the old Police Station in Town Hall.
Devi: I too started volunteering in the old Police Station located in Town Hall in 2014.

What drew you to volunteering and why at the Erie Police Department?

Bill: I was always connected to the communities I lived in; when I moved to Erie from Virginia I checked Erie’s website and saw the opportunity to participate in the Citizens’ Police Academy. Once I graduated from the Citizens’ Academy, I knew I wanted to volunteer my time with the Erie Police Department.
Devi: I met former Chief Vasquez at a National Night Out event in my neighborhood and he was looking for volunteers to help the department. I then got very involved with the Keep Erie Safe campaign, a citizen’s group which supported bond 2A to fund the new Police Station and Municipal Court Building. After the election, I wanted to continue my involvement and participated in the Citizen’s Police Academy and have been volunteering ever since.

Tell us what you do when volunteering for the Erie Police Department?

Bill: I have a background in computer software, so a natural spot for me to volunteer was with data input. I also assisted with the Keep Erie Safe Committee and gave many tours of our old Police Station. I currently assist when needed to help with the Citizens’ Police Academy and help out with Oral Boards of potential new officers.
Devi: I’ll help out with just about anything that is needed! I assist with office work, help the Detectives with special projects, assist the Citizens’ Police Academy and help out when requested with property and evidence.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

Bill: Getting to interact and work with all of the amazing people in the Police Department and in the community. It is a positive environment I truly enjoy.
Devi: I feel very good being able to lend a helping hand to this Police Department. I really enjoy working with the amazing staff and the other volunteers.

What other volunteer opportunities are available? How would someone get involved?

Bill & Devi: The best way to get involved is to participate in the Citizens’ Police Academy. This is held annually in the spring. If you’ve missed it this year but still want to get involved, there are opportunities for office work/data entry, assistance at special events and other opportunities. The best way to learn more information is to give the Police Department a call directly – 303-926-2800 or email.
